Monday night, I left my Kindle wireless connection switched on so that it could download my pre-ordered copy of
American Wife the second that it went on sale.
I woke up Tuesday morning, grabbed the book, and have barely set it down since! It's one of those books that makes you resent having to shower and drive and prepare food (I've discovered that you can actually keep reading while working and eating).
If you haven't heard of it, it is a novel about a "First Lady" that is based on the life of Laura Bush...its fictionalized, but most of the broad strokes are the same. They pay a lot of attention the the
car wreck incident , for example, and she's a small-town librarian who marries a politically-connected charmer (with substance-abuse issues, who finds religion). As a confirmed fan of horrible men (and fan of writing about their fictional wives), I am really loving the "can you love someone and hate what they do" issues sprinkles through it...the writing itself is lovely. When I've finished, I'll go through and point out some of the best bits.
Pre-release comments were speculating that it was a "hit-piece" on Laura Bush, but I don't think that's true at all. It doesn't seem critical, so much as curious. To the extent that Charlie Blackwell "is" George Bush, he's not being flattered, by any extent- and yet, I feel like I may be just a little bit in love with him.
In any event, I'm only 4/5 of the way through, but feel confident in recommending it!
